Tarime Primary School

Tarime Primary School

Poverty is a reality for many in Tanzania.  In fact many of the children who come to Angel House Orphanage have never been to school.  Cost is one of the factors that limits the effectiveness of the Tanzanian educational system.

Although Primary school is free, every child is required to purchase a uniform and school shoes.  In addition, the costs of textbooks, paper, and pencils often results in students going without these essential resources. Secondary school (high school) requires school fees as well as the uniform and school supplies.

This simple fact alone is why many children do not have an opportunity to attend school.

Unfortunately the lack of government resources for education has also limited the oversight/accountability of local schools.  In the Form 4 national exam this past year (high school graduation test) only 25% of the students passed the exam.  Needless-to-say, resources are desperately needed to improve the Tanzanian educational system.

The Ministries’ Response:

Angel House has been blessed with the resources to send the primary children to a private English medium school where they are taught English, the language of commerce and higher education in Tanzania.  Most Tanzanians send their children to private schools if they can afford the expense.

Future Doctor

The Angel House secondary children will attend public schools until the new secondary school is ready for operation in January 2011. However. Grass Roots Ministries’ desire is to help more than just the children at Angel House. GRM hopes to be able to provide scholarships for other children in the community who cannot afford school.  This investment in education will impact the community for years to come.

Once the secondary school is established Grass Roots Ministries will consider other educational endeavors. If you would like to help with the school construction or with the efforts to educate the children please click on How to Help.
